US President Trump reignites Trade War, Targets Apple & EU, threatens 25, 50% tariffs - President Donald Trump said that Apple would pay a 25% tariff on iPhones that are sold in the United States but not made in the country. "I have long ago informed Tim Cook of Apple that I expect their iPhone’s (sic) that will be sold in the United States of America will be manufactured and built in the United States, not India, or anyplace else," he wrote in a Truth Social post. Trump threatened to impose a 25% tariff on Apple for any iPhones sold, but not manufactured, in the United States. More than 60 million phones are sold in the United States annually, but the country has no smartphone manufacturing. Poland's Trade Minister Michal Baranowski played down on Friday (May 23) the threat of the United States imposing 50% tariffs on European goods from June 1 as part of ongoing negotiations, underlining there was time for EU-U.S. talks until early July.
