J&K: IICT empowers tribal girls; launches first carpet weaving center in Bandipora - In a groundbreaking initiative by the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology (IICT) in Srinagar, tribal girls in Bandipora villages of North Kashmir are receiving training in carpet weaving to achieve financial independence. With around 20 girls enrolled, this center marks the first of its kind in the region, sponsored by the National Backward Classes Financial and Development Corporation. Praised by participants for providing vital skills and opportunities previously inaccessible, the initiative aims to empower these girls and revitalize the traditional art of carpet weaving in Bandipora. Speaking to ANI, a weaving artist said, “It’s been three months that we have been running the carpet centre and I thank the Indian Institute of Carpet Technology. Girls from other travel areas in Kashmir get inspired by our works.” Speaking to ANI, a weaving artist said, “Kashmir is known for its ‘Kalin’. But this tradition of Kalin almost got distinct but now we have started weaving these carpets again. The girls who are associated with this initiative belong to the tribal community. They all are educated and they believe it’s better to do something rather than sitting at home.
