Makar Sankranti and Pongal both are the Indian Festivals, celebrated by the citizens of India. These festivals has been celebrated in India for more n more years ago. Many of Indian didn't know the exact difference of both of these festivals. In this article we are going to know the exact differences between Makar Sankranti and Pongal.

What is Pongal?

Pongal is a south Indian festival day in the Tai (Tamil) Calender, celebrated on 14 January every year. It is dedicated to the Sun. Basically in the ancient time, it is a festival started by the farmers on the occassion of harvesting of new year's first crop. On this day, farmers cook a special type of dish called "Pongal" from the newly harvested crop.


What is Makar Sankranti?

According to the Hindu Calender, this festival is also celebrated on 14 January  by the North indian Peoples. This festival is also dedicated to the Sun. Farmers have started celebrating this festival on the occassion of harvesting of new year's first crop.

The Actual Difference

Basically, There is no any  major difference between both of these festivals. One of the minor difference is the name only. In North Indian region, 14 January is known for "Makar Sankranti", and in the South Indian region, people called it "Pongal".
